History of Physiotherapy!

24 May 2013
The two world wars make Western countries reveals the need to respond adequately to the huge amount of people with amputations in the musculature system that generated dysfunction that affected the population causing functional deficits. In this situation then joined as endemic diseases considered. The clearest example is the Poliomyelitis, affecting large numbers of children, causing highly disabling situations for the individual. Orthopedic surgeons and chiropractors improved the situation for many patients with the treatments applied, but there was a continuity to try to restore lost function, either in its entirety and in its functional substitution most appropriate in each case.

From this need arises the great momentum of physiotherapy in the Western world. Thus, both in the U.S. and in the UK, there was a significant increase Physiotherapy professional, who were called Physical Therapists and Physiotherapists, respectively. This increase was expanded shortly after the rest of Europe, leaving only Spain, Italy and Greece without incorporating it until many years later.

The effects of the Spanish Civil War and its long delayed post-war what in other countries is being done in the field of functional recovery and physiotherapy. Thus, in Spain, until 1957 do not appear timid solutions, responsible practitioners, nurses, ladies of the Red Cross and others, in the field of physiotherapy.
The needs of surgeons increasingly demanding the continuity of surgical repair and the spectacular of injuries polio left, were two of the main factors that led to create a group of people trained specifically in the field of Functional Re-education, which are the physiotherapists.

Physiotherapy was officially born in Spain by Law Decree 26 June 1957 "by establishing the specialty of Physiotherapy, Health Technical Assistant, and Nurse Practitioner, with two years of training and Faculties dependent medicine ". (BOE 08/23/1957). With this legislation is structured training of physiotherapists and all those who were performing physical therapist functions ATS title, Nurse Practitioner or, through Resolutions Complementary be given the opportunity to get the title of Specialist in Physiotherapy
This solution was not appropriate, because the curriculum for Physiotherapy was insufficient, as it was intended too generalist ATS training regarding the limited utility training content for subsequent professional practice (70%). The division curriculum for certification of Physiotherapy was based on three years of training in ATS, with a workload of 2,500 hours, and two years of Specialty, containing 800 hours, which was far to the general tone of other countries, where the number of hours devoted to training the physiotherapist hovered around 3,000.

Physiotherapy born as university in Spain by Royal Decree 2.965/80, of December 12, 1980," on the integration at the University of the Studies of Physiotherapy to Stanford University." (BOE 19/01/1981). Then, there is the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of June 1, 1982," by establishing the Guidelines for Writing Curricula of Colleges of Physiotherapy ". (BOE 04/06/1982). With this new regulation substantially changed training premises, from two years of specialty ATS to three years, giving it the opportunity to be more appropriate and focused on the Degree of Diploma in Physiotherapy, with a workload of 3600 hours that is comparable to that contained in the Study Plans in the EEC
From 1982-1986, a period in which the first class went Diploma in Physiotherapy, there was a break in the evolution of the profession, until the Spanish Universities were including gradually Physiotherapy studies within the Departments of Health Sciences. Currently there are 24 University Schools of Physiotherapy, 18 of which exist to public universities, with an average which is between 50 and 60 seats, while the remaining 6, 4 are private and 2 attached to public universities. Noted in this connection that the average number of places in private Physiotherapy Colleges is between 140 and 250 students.

Since 1986, when the first class out of professional School of Physiotherapy of Valencia, until 1996, in which 18 schools existed in the whole country, were formed in Spain 5,557 new Diploma in Physiotherapy. During 1997-1998, six new schools, the number of Diploma in Physiotherapy increased to 10,036. So, in 12 years, the number of physiotherapists increased by 136%. This situation, added to the stagnation in recent years regarding the recruitment of physiotherapists within the Public Health System, has caused the birth of unemployment in the profession, so that the free exercise is the field in which the therapists will exercise mainly in the coming years.

The functions of physiotherapists, among others, the establishment and implementation of those physical media can be used with therapeutic effects in treatments provided to users of all medical and surgical specialties where necessary the application of these means, understood by physical means: electricity, heat, cold, massage, water, air, movement, light and therapeutic exercises with special techniques, among others, cardiorespiratory, orthopedics, coronary, neurological injuries, exercises maternal pre-and post-partum, and performing acts and massage treatments, osteopathy, chiropractic, and other therapeutic techniques reflex specific manual therapies, alternative and / or complementary competence related to the field of physical therapy that can be used in the treatment of users.
The level of care, teaching and research are the three pillars on which turns physiotherapy.
